Rules for writing Roman numerals

If there is a smaller number on the right side of a larger number, then it is added to the larger number on the left side. For example, XVIII = 10+5+1+1+1 = 18.

If a smaller number is on the left side of the larger number, then it is subtracted from the number on the right side e.g. XCV= 100 – 10 + 5.
